Neil Mitchell can’t quite believe he’s suggesting this, but he wants a new tax to be introduced.

With Airbnb booming and a deepening rental crisis, the 3AW Mornings host is calling for Airbnb owners to pay a $5000 annual fee to the state government.

“If Airbnb incurred a fee and rental properties didn’t, more people would look at renting their property long-term,” he said.

The 3AW Mornings host is also calling for greater oversight to ensure Airbnb properties are safe.

“I know you fill in this little form for the Airbnb people saying the heating system won’t kill people, but who checks it?,” he said.

The number of Airbnb properties on the Mornington Peninsula has surged by about 25 per cent in the past year, with more than 5000 properties now available on the platform.

Mornington Peninsula mayor Steve Holland thinks it’ll “keep growing” and a lack of regulation is causing problems.

“We’re not really in charge because they’re unregulated,” he told Neil Mitchell.
