The massive number of Australians expected to vote early

A mammoth number of Australians are expected to vote early in the upcoming federal election.

About half of people are expected to cast their vote before polling day on May 21.

Australian Electoral Commission spokesperson Evan Ekin-Smith says about 40 per cent of people voted early in the 2019 federal election, and that figure will likely be higher this year.

“Early voting has been tracking up and up,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“It tends to start a little bit softly and then get up and up. Those final two days of early voting tend to be the biggest by a country mile.”

But those who can vote on polling day should do so.

“People should be turning up on election day if they can. The early voting period is only for people who cannot turn up on the polling day,” Mr Ekin-Smith said.
