Leigh Matthews says it’s an enormous vote of confidence in Sam Docherty’s character that he’s been deemed fit enough to take his place in Carlton’s side for Saturday’s Elimination Final.

The inspirational defender will return from an ACL injury after just 183 days, completing a remarkable comeback.

Matthews told Wide World of Sports there would be “some logic” to consider playing Docherty as the sub due to his lack of match fitness.

“You’ve have to think he’s moving well,” he said on 3AW.

“But when you haven’t played for six months and virtually no match practice…it’s an enormous tick for Sam Docherty.”
