A Canberra couple have paid a whopping $25,000 to fly two cats they adopted from Malaysia to Australia.

Brooke Jones said a policy change meant her pets had to be brought home via Singapore, as Malaysia was no longer an “approved country”.

“We had to import them first into Singapore, pay a lot of money for that – have a rabies test – and then we had to have them boarded in Singapore until we could get all the paperwork done via Australia to get them into the Mickleham quarantine facility in Melbourne, and finally here to us in Canberra,” she told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.

“And the whole process took almost six months.”
