Smartwatch devices such as Apple watches, Fitbits and Garmin watches have been labelled a “game-changer” in helping people become more healthy and active.

The devices track heart rate and steps and can signal alerts for people to get moving throughout the day.

Professor David Dunstan, head of the Baker-Deakin Department of Lifestyle and Diabetes, specialises in physical activity research and claims smartwatch devices are having a big impact in the health of the people who wear them.

“I would call it a game-changer,” Professor Dunstan told Neil Mitchell.

“It is allowing us to really personalise people’s movement and sedentary patterns and try and change that and support them to be sitting less and moving more throughout the day.”

Former 3AW reporter Paul Bentley also came on air to speak about how his smartwatch helped save his life.
