The fight to save Australian prosecco
Australian winemakers are fighting for the right to continue to use the name ‘prosecco’.
Prosecco was the name of a grape variety which was first grown in Australia in the 1990s, but that variety has since been renamed ‘glera’.
The European Union is now seeking to limit wine labelled ‘prosecco’ to that grown in the Veneto region in Italy.
Brown Brothers winemaker, Katherine Brown, says the change would “confuse the hell out of customers” and she and other winemakers are “digging our heels in”.
“It’s a $200 million industry, so we’ve really built this industry into something really huge over the last 20 years,” she told Jacqui Felgate and Jimmy Bartel.
