Nicole Piastri says she shed a tear watching her son’s maiden Formula 1 win from afar.

Melbourne-born McLaren driver Oscar Piastri’s wait for his first victory is over, winning the Hungarian Grand Prix overnight.

Watching from her home, Ms Piastri told Jacqui Felgate the circumstances of the race – which saw Oscar give up the lead of the race before teammate Lando Norris was ordered to give the place back – made it a nerve-wracking few hours.

“There were some highs and lows (throughout the race),” she said on 3AW.

“We were in disbelief at the start when he (took the lead)…in the end we were hoping it would all fall his way.”
