The countries which can’t get enough of Australian ice cream
Australian ice cream exports are booming to new record highs as international markets develop a taste for them.
Exports reached a record $46 million in 2020-21.
Drumsticks, Weis and Magnums are among the products gaining popularity abroad, with Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and the Philippines proving strong markets for Australian ice cream products.
National president of Dairy Industry Association of Australia, Darryl Cardona, says a wide range of products are proving popular.
“We make some of the world’s best ice cream because we have the best dairy products,” he told 3AW Breakfast.
The federal government has announced a $72.2 million Agribusiness Expansion Initiative to support dairy producers.
Mr Cardona says that will fuel more international growth for Australian ice creams.
“I think we’ve always had the capability but we’ve just never had the market and the funding,” Mr Cardona said.
“Now that the government has announced that funding it’ll give the opportunity for these companies to actually target the countries better and easier.”
