Bonny Bar

177 Brunswick Street

Fitzroy

While securing a last-minute reservation for February 14th might be as elusive as Cupid himself, fear not, for love knows no calendar constraints.

Bonny Bar in Fitzroy is a year-round haven for couples seeking a romantic rendezvous that doesn’t compromise on culinary excellence or ambiance.

Bonny Bar has evolved its residency system over time. Previously, the bar hosted three-month-long pop-ups with rotating chefs. However, in late 2022, the bar brought on James Cornwall, the former head chef of Cumulus Inc, for a long-term residency.

It’s nestled on the top end of Brunswick Street, Bonny Bar is a warm, contemporary vibe that serves as an ideal backdrop for intimate evenings.

This neighbourhood gem has mastered the art of balancing sophistication with accessibility. What truly sets Bonny apart is its impressive beverage selection.

The bar boasts a remarkable 27 taps, twelve of these taps are dedicated to craft beers, while the rest flow with an innovative array of beer-infused cocktails, natural wines, and even cold-brew coffee.

Bonny Bar’s commitment to sustainability and local sourcing adds another layer of appeal for conscientious couples. The venue’s focus on independent local wines and craft beers not only supports the community but also provides a unique tasting experience that’s rooted in the region’s terroir.

For those who appreciate a good deal as much as a good meal, Bonny’s $30 wagyu steak night on Wednesdays and Sundays is a testament to the bar’s commitment to quality without breaking the bank.

If that doesn’t do it for you, you can choose from $30 grilled barramundi, a $28 wagyu double cheeseburger, or a $28 baked three-cheese gnocchi, be like me otherwise – share a couple!

We began where all good meals should start- bread. Specifically their spelt flatbread with the subtle nuttiness of an almond dip with fennel pollen drizzled over the top to dip.

We also used flatbread, loading the sweet heirloom tomato salad with it – chunks of zucchini, and lemon ricotta plate made a vibrant summer composition.

The three-cheese gnocchi was baked in a tomato base but topped with a light pesto drizzle. The dish balanced rich cheese, bright tomato, and herbal notes into a satisfying, well-executed plate.

For our mains, we sampled the margarita chicken with bocconcini and basil. While the flavours of margarita were present, the chicken itself leaned towards being a bit dry, a slight drawback in an otherwise appealing dish.

The creamy bocconcini and fresh basil did help to add some needed moisture and brightness.

But what did win the night was the sher wagyu steak fries, which was a complete triumph.

Cooked perfectly medium-rare, the wagyu melted with rich, buttery flavour. Sauce diane – a classic mushroom cream sauce – elevated the steak, and fries and a side salad finished it off generously.

Miso and lime barramundi showcased culinary precision. The fish was impeccably cooked – flaky and tender. The glaze delivered a complex interplay of umami and citrus.

We also ordered a side of french fries and while they were undeniably well-executed – crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside – it’s worth noting that all of the main dishes already come with fries.

This wasn’t communicated at the time of ordering, resulting in a potato surplus.

With its cosy interior adorned with hanging plants and warm lighting, Bonny creates an ambiance that’s both inviting and intimate.

Snuggle up on the couches, perch at the bar, or enjoy the outdoor area while we still have some summer nights left, the setting is primed for those stolen glances and whispered sweet nothings that define a romantic evening out.
