The boss of the Victorian Transport Association says he’s noticed a worrying trend on the state’s roads since lockdown ended.

The observation comes after a horror crash involving a truck and several vehicles on the Calder Freeway yesterday which killed a toddler and left three others fighting for life.

Victorian Transport Association CEO, Peter Anderson, says he’s concerned about the behaviour of both heavy vehicle drivers and other motorists.

“Being aware of other road users is most important,” he told 3AW Mornings.

“That’s something I’ve noticed of late, coming back from COVID, is the lack of awareness of other vehicles the roads by other drivers, whether they be heavy vehicle drivers or other drivers.”

Mr Anderson said better driver education about truck braking times would make the roads safer.

“One of the common issues with heavy vehicles are the gaps taken up in front of the vehicle as the traffic slows down, and the driver goes into panic mode trying to stop his truck,” he said.

“Cars can stop a lot faster than large heavy vehicles and that’s a common issue.”
