The ‘alarming’ behaviour that’s putting Victorians at risk on our roads
It’s been a horror festive period on the roads, with five deaths since Christmas.
During Operation Roadwise, from December 17 to 26, Superintendent John Fitzpatrick says “alarming” patterns were observed among road users.
“In those 10 days we’ve had 697 people who haven’t been authorised to drive — that’s either disqualified drivers, suspended drivers, or they’ve never held a licence,” he told Shane McInnes, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
“The risk that places the community at is alarming.
“We should all be worried about that.”
Police also detected 3200 speeding offences and 507 instances of people using mobile phones while driving during the 10 day period.
“It’s really alarming,” Superintendent Fitzpatrick said.
“The message we’re trying to send to the community is just not getting through.”
