RUMOUR CONFIRMED

Surgeons at several Melbourne hospitals have been told only to proceed with elective surgeries if they “know the patient well”.

Eastern Health experienced a significant IT system outage on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

3AW Breakfast understands staff cannot access their emails or phones, or patient medical records.

Eastern Health has declared a “code yellow” and the health organisation says it has “determined the specific cause” of the issue.

A letter sent to surgeons and seen by Neil Mitchell’s program, says “the network is down and cannot access electronic records. Emergency cases should proceed, elective cases should only proceed if you know the patient well”.

Eastern Health operates Box Hill Hospital, Maroondah Hospital, Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully and a number of other surgical centres.

UPDATE: As of 2.45, rectification works have largely been completed and the “code yellow” has ended.
