Footage of an enormous queue waiting to inspect a one bedroom apartment in Burnley over the weekend has highlighted the extent of the current rental crisis.

In the video, which was posted on Reddit, a queue stretches hundreds of metres down the road.

Managing editor of Domain, Alice Stolz, says she’s not surprised by the queue.

“House rents in Melbourne have gone up 11 per cent on year and unit rents have gone up 23.1 per cent on year,” she told Neil Mitchell.

“The vacancy rate in Melbourne is now one per cent. To remind people, in a healthy rental market it would be around three or four per cent.”
