Shane McInnes has slammed councils for sneakily hiking up rates for the next financial year the day before Christmas while making the claim they would be capping rates.

The current rate figures are sitting at 2.75 per cent but the proposed rate cap has the figure at 3 per cent – the second highest rate cap on record since the measure was introduced back in 2015.

“So the cap has actually increased, allowing councils to bring in more revenue year-on-year,” he revealed.

Council Watch’s Dean Hurlston says councils need to be held accountable.

“Councils are perpetual liars … they’re misleading the Victorian public, they are not struggling whatsoever,” he said.
