The SES has sent a warning to more than 30,000 people who are camping across the state.

There is a risk of thunderstorms across the entire state this afternoon and evening, and also tomorrow.

SES State Duty Officer Laura Dewildt, says there’s particular concern about the large number of people camping near the beach.

Strong winds are forecast for Rosebud, Phillip Island, Wilsons Promontory, and potentially Apollo Bay and the Surf Coast.

Ms Dewildt urged campers to “make sure that they’re thinking about where they’re camping – not … under trees or near streams”.

“And just definitely keep an eye on conditions,” she told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Tom Elliott.

“It’s a bit of a dynamic 24 to 48 hours for Victoria at the moment.”

A severe thunderstorm warning is in place for heavy rain, damaging winds and large hailstone for the North Central, North East and parts of Central, South West, Northern Country and West and South Gippsland districts.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds is also in place for parts of the Central, South West and West and South Gippsland districts.
