Hard rubbish is piling up on streets in Moreland City Council, blocking footpaths and spilling onto roads.

In some areas, it was supposed to be collected 10 days ago.

But staff shortages due to COVID-19 mean contractors didn’t begin collecting hard waste until yesterday.

“We’re asking ratepayers to please just be patient and even maybe delay putting out their hard waste for a few days,” Moreland councillor Oscar Yildiz told Neil Mitchell.

“We’ve got regular updates on our website.”

Councillor Yildiz says the current hard rubbish system isn’t just unsightly, it promotes illegal dumping.

“A lot of people walk around or bring trailers and just dump their rubbish onto someone else’s nature strip,” he said.

Moreland council will move to a booking only hard rubbish collection service next year.
