Australia’s university sector is calling on whoever wins government to “properly” fund higher education in the country.

It comes after a report by the Australia Institute’s Centre For Future Work revealed free undergraduate courses and fully funded research would be made possible by lifting the higher education budget to one per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Alison Barnes, National President of the National Tertiary Education Union, said it had the ability to “transform lives” for people.

“We really hoping that whoever wins the next elections really thinks about the long-term interests of Australian and Australian students and fund higher education properly,” she said on 3AW Drive.
