‘Real mess’: Government reaches ‘in principle agreement’ with nurses after strikes results in cancellation of surgeries

The Victorian branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, has suspended their stage two industrial action, after the union reached an “in principle” agreement with the Victorian Government.

Jacqui Felgate says the strike resulted in the cancellation of 15 surgeries at St Vincent’s Hospital, while traffic controllers with the CFMEU earn over $200,000 a year.

“Why does it take the cancellation of beds to get a reasonable deal on the table here, to potentially risk lives in an already overburdened system,” she said.

Shadow health minister, Georgie Crozier, has criticised the government for allowing the strikes to get this far.

“It’s a real mess, and it’s the government’s own doing,” she said.
