The infamous ghost prison near Geelong will finally start housing inmates from the middle of 2025, the state government has announced.

As covered extensively by 3AW Drive host Jacqui Felgate, the $1.19 billion Western Plains Correction Facility was finished in 2022, but has largely been left dormant since.

After Wednesday’s announcement that Port Phillip Prison will close and inmates will move to the facility, Shadow Police Minister Brad Battin told Heidi Murphy there still remains plenty of questions for the Allan government to answer over the prison.

“It was originally built from a knee-jerk reaction,” Mr Battin said on 3AW.

“Crime rate in Victoria is still going up, but there’s less people going into jails and that’s one for the government to answer.”
