Push to increase tax on wine and beer to help federal budget
Boozers could soon be squeezed under a new bid to bring the federal budget back into the black.
The Foundation For Alcohol Research and Education will today urge the Turnbull Government to increase the tax on wine by about $3.80 a bottle and put an extra seven cents or so on a pint of draught beer.
The 10 per cent increase to excise tax on booze would see consumption drop by about 9.4 per cent, while delivering an extra $3.9 billion dollars to government coffers.
