Australian convenience stores are calling for vapes containing nicotine to be sold from behind the counter in a similar way to cigarettes.

The Australian Association of Convenience Stores is calling for the change, arguing it’s the only way to counter black market sales of nicotine-containing vapes, which are currently illegal without a prescription.

Professor Simon Chapman from the school of public health at the University of Sydney slammed the push, arguing the industry has been flouting the rules for years.

“They’re trying to position themselves, on the front page of The Age this morning, as being a responsible industry,” he told Ross and Russel.
