Pub Of The Week: Fox Hotel, Collingwood
351 Wellington St, Collingwood.

When?: 23 February 2024.
Summary:
Some pubs just get it. Treat your customer well and be repaid many times over.
The Fox is one of those wonderful old pubs that with the consistency of owner/operators delivering on hospitality, then an airtight relationship is established.
On the unglamorous corner of Wellington and Alexandra Parade Collingwood, the façade gives no indication of how good it is inside, with old prints adorning the walls, small front bar/dining rooms to dine, small beer garden (dog friendly) and rooftop bar, basically observing the glacial movement of traffic on the main drag.
Much is packed into a compact space; Loved the permanent low lighting.
And while the menu for food and drink is great, popular board games such as Celebrity Head, Trivial Pursuit await if it’s a communal night out you’re after. Your living room away from home.
Old sandy tiles, pub carpet, old furniture gives this a real pub feel, and when you peruse the menu, then you know the Fox is a complete package. This is modern, sharp pub grub, vegan/vegetarian options with points of difference to enthuse over.
Mix of commercial and independent beer brands, with Guinness on tap ($8/pot); small wine list that seeks out smaller producers (Cloak, Dagger from the Strathbogie’s) and meal deals throughout the week, e.g., Curry Monday (20), 2 course roast Sunday (30) are some examples.
Pokies: No.
TAB: No.
Some great dishes tried were;
- Bug and Prawn Pie. $29. A beauty. Long time staple of the Fox. Grilled Bug tail atop, a proper pie with the prawn filling, a side of mash, w/broccolini, garlic butter. Woe betide this one being removed from the ‘Classic Fox Fare’.
- Pork Belly w/crackling. $30. Fabulous Sunday lunch. A big, properly cooked slab of pork belly, with 4-5 potatoes, coleslaw, corn, broccolini, apple, Kakadu plum relish, red wine jus. All flavours brilliant, hats off to the work that went into the RWJ. And the addition of a Kransky confirmed its status as Homer Simpson’s Magical Animal.
Just Wonderful. May The Fox continue like this for years to come.
