A political marketing expert has warned Australians they’re in for a deluge of pointed advertising in the lead up to election day.

Both major parties, as well as the United Australia Party, are already taking up big chunks of prime-time television, and Dr Andrew Hughes says it’s only going to increase.

“We’ll be inundated to the point where you’ll want to switch off,” Dr Hughes from the Australian National University, told Heidi Murphy on 3AW Drive.

“You’ll want to just vote early as a way of tuning out all the stuff about politics going on at the moment, which is what we saw in 2019 a bit.

“But it’ll be pretty bad, to put in context Labor and Liberal both spent around $30 million each at the last federal election campaign on just advertising alone.

“Clive Palmer spent $70 million.”

However, Dr Hughes said Clive Palmer had already spent around $30 million.

“He’s probably got another $40 or $50 (million) to go, that puts it at around $2.5 million a day in advertising.

“It’s a lot of money if you think about it.”
