Under the state’s new public drunkenness laws, police officers will be forced to leave drunks who refuse their assistance on the street.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt claims officers will be working counter to their instincts, and in some circumstances, will have “no capacity to intervene”.

“They just instinctively want to do the right thing,” Gatt told Ross and Russel.
