Police defend crowd behaviour at the Melbourne Cup, despite media bashing
Police have defended the behaviour of Melbourne Cup racegoers, despite the bashing they’ve copped from sections of the media.
Several international news outlets have picked several unflattering photos and splashed them around, branding the event ‘decadent and depraved.’
But is it really that bad?
Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett told Neil Mitchell police were ‘very happy’ with the crowd.
Just seven of the 97,479 people who attended were arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour.
‘I actually thought the crowd was well behaved,’ he said.
‘I thought there was a good atmosphere and people were enjoying themselves.’
