Police crack down on e-scooter riders
Police are cracking down on e-scooters in a bid to improve safety for all road users.
They’ll be handing out on-the-spot fines of $185 or more for non-compliance with trial e-scooter rules.
Police will also be ramping up enforcement of rules on privately-owned e-scooters.
Victoria Police Road Policing Superintendent Justin Goldsmith says anyone with a privately-owned e-scooter must educate themselves.
“People think just because you can purchase them you can ride them wherever you like,” he told Jacqui Felgate and Jimmy Bartel, filling in for Ross and Russel.
“If you’ve got a private e-scooter you can only use it on private property. If it goes more than 10km/h you cannot use it in a public place.”
People caught riding privately-owned e-scooters which can travel faster than 10km/h face a $925 fine.
From December 1 last year to August 31 this year, police issued 487 e-scooter infringement notices, with the majority for failing to wear a helmet, riding on a footpath, and carrying more than one person.
