Police assaulted, dozens evicted, in disgusting display from footy fans at MCG

Two police officers were assaulted and more than 50 people booted out of the MCG on Saturday night in a disgusting display of behaviour from fans during the Richmond and Essendon game.

Victoria Police say alcohol “pre-loading” before the game had significantly contributed to the issue.

Among the offences;

• A 21-year-old man was arrested after being escorted from the ground for being drunk. He bit an officer while being led from the ground. It’s expected he’ll be charged with assaulting police and being drunk.
• A 36-year-old man was arrested and OC sprayed after he punched a police officer who approached him for urinating outside the MCG. He’s also expected to be charged.
• A 19-year-old woman was arrested in relation to an assault and is also expected to be charged.
• Two fans were also evicted for running onto the MCG during the game.

Kayleen said she was at the game and told 3AW Football she was “ashamed” by what she saw.

“There were fights everywhere,” she said.

“It was just ridiculous.”

Richmond great Matthew Richardson was at the match in a fan capacity and admits he was left uncomfortable by a lot of what he saw in the stands.
