Study reveals Delta variant no worse in children
A new study has found children rarely experience longer term symptoms from Covid-19 for more than 12 weeks.
The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute has found the most common ailments which lasted up to three months were headache, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
Luke Grant spoke with Professor Nigel Curtis from the Institute about the findings.
He says the data is supported by several studies from around the world.
The review, published in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal is based on 14 international studies and some children do not show a difference in symptoms between those who have been infected by SARS-CoV-2 and those who haven’t.
The Institute has also found the Delta strain does not cause more severe disease in children, but spreads faster.
The report suggests COVID-19 in children and adolescents is rarely severe, and very rarely causes death, presenting in a similar way to the common cold.
Only 70 Australian children with COVID have been admitted to hospital. Five were admitted to intensive care.
