Oyster farmer trial new techniques to stop wild species spoiling stock
A trial is underway to combat the “overcatch” spoiling 20 million dollars worth of Sydney rock oysters grown in Queensland every year.
Overcatch involves juvenile wild oysters settling on farmed stock, wasting around 30 per cent of oysters.
Rural reporter Madelaine McNeill spoke to Queensland Oyster Growers Association vice-president , and owner of Kooringal Oysters, Andrew Robson about what techniques farmers are using to tackle the issue – and how it could boost Queensland’s goal to increase oyster production 100-fold.
