Former Olympic athlete wants kids to stand up in the classroom to fight obesity

Tom Elliott

A former Olympian wants children to study standing up in class to help tackle the nation’s obesity epidemic.

Jane Fleming has told Neil Mitchell the biggest, single decline in a human being’s activity is the day they start school.

She says more height-adjustable desks should be used in schools with studies proving the benefits of getting up off your backside.

“We have legislation around smoking, we have legislation around food labelling, we have legislation around a whole lot of other things that affect the population’s health.” said Jane.

“This is exactly the same.”

Fleming also wants children on their feet outside the classroom too, by moving drop-off zones further away from the school gates.
