The president of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network has responded to the scenes outside Town Hall last night.

Nasser Mashni says while he didn’t see the violence, he did hear from people who told him a different story to what has been reported.

“In fact, they [Israeli supporters] were deliberately antagonistic and provocative and went up to the group with an Israeli flag,” he told Tom Elliott.

He also says he appreciated the opportunity the motion gave for democracy.

“The deputy mayor had to use their privilege to overturn the motion – which was disappointing to us, but it was a great opportunity for democracy to be spoken,” he said.

Victoria Police confirmed there were no major incidents reported but they did move on a number of individuals, including two men who walked through a protest group of more than 200 people. The men did not report being assaulted to police at the time. A man who was filming the rally reported he was kicked in the leg by a protester. Police are reviewing CCTV and encourage anyone who experienced or witnessed prejudice-motivated crime to report it to police.
