‘Over-played’: Popular measurement of health dismissed by health expert
Experts say BMI has been “over-played” following new evidence which suggests only considering measuring BMI is a poor indicator of disease and mortality.
Chair of the Australian College of GP’s specific interests obesity management group, Dr Terry-Lynne South, says BMI is “just a ratio.”
“There’s been a number of research articles that have come out recently to say that yes, BMI is not the best predictor of fat mass and it’s not the best predictor of unhealthy fat mass … historically, it’s been used as a risk-factor, but we have over played it,” she told Neil Mitchell.
