The federal communications minister, Michelle Rowland, has called the major Optus network outage “dangerous” and a “wake-up call” following an announcement of a review into the cause.

She says the option for customers to be picked up by other networks when theirs goes down has been looked at and exists in some form for some companies and providers.

“There is what we call redundancies … those services were able to resume because an alternative provider was available,” she told Neil Mitchell.

She also says the service provider is yet to reveal the exact cause of the outage but she does have her suspicions.

“It does appear to be a fault that is deep within what we call the core networks, so essentially the brains of the network,” she said.
