One in four Australian parents say they only read to their children once a week, or not at all.

And more than half say they’re “nervous” about reading to their children because they doubt their own reading ability.

Lee Walker, Publishing Director at Oxford University Press Australia & New Zealand, told Tom Elliott the fact parents were more “time poor” than previous generations absolutely played a part.

“It makes it harder,” she said.

But she said she was “reassured” to hear 7/10 parents wish they had more time to read to their kids, suggesting it wasn’t because they didn’t care about reading to their kids.

“I think that’s a really good stat,” she said.
