A New York City cab driver has travelled more than 5000 kilometres to cash in a nine-year-old IOU.

John McDonagh drove Irishman Shane Gaffney in the early hours of the morning almost a decade ago, but when he arrived at his destination his passenger didn’t have enough money to pay his fare.

“He tells me he owns a bar in Dublin,” Mr McDonagh told Ross and Russel.

“He wrote down … ‘Go to Gaffney and Son in Dublin and I will be given two pints of beer’.

Mr McDonagh, who is a playwright when he’s not driving a cab, was recently in Dublin where his one-man play is running, so he decided to finally cash in.

“When I went into the bar they had a huge banner hanging over the bar welcoming me,” he said.
