NRMA lists reasons why fuel excise should not be cut
The NRMA has listed a number of reasons why the fuel excise should not be cut.
It comes as motorists continue to feel pain at the pump, with the cost of petrol rising well over $2 a litre over the weekend.
However Peter Khoury, Spokesperson for the NRMA, says that money from the fuel excise goes into the country’s roads, and that needs to be maintained.
“It’s about making sure we have a consistent revenue stream from the very people who drive, to ensure that governments can maintain roads to a safe standard,” he told Tom Elliott on 3AW Drive.
“The other issue is it’s just unworkable really to align the excise to oil price movements, and we’re only only seeing that now over the last 24-48 hours.
“Oil prices are starting to fall, and have fallen quite considerably, so the likelihood if those falls are passed on to motorists we’ll see more relief as a result of oil prices falling than we would by cutting the excise.”
