Northern Territory alcohol bans to return under new laws
Alcohol bans will be reinstated in all Aboriginal town camps and communities in the Northern Territory.
The Territory’s parliament passed the Liquor Amendment Act just hours after it was introduced on Tuesday evening.
The laws will prohibit takeaway alcohol in camps and communities which aren’t already dry by choice.
Chief Minister Natasha Fyles says that means only eight of the 96 major communities will be affected.
The restrictions will be introduced by the end of the week.
The new legislation comes following months of national debate about rising crime rates in Alice Springs, after alcohol ban laws lapsed.
