New West Coast coach Andrew McQualter says he’s determined to build a good relationship with the often combative local media in Perth.

Sections of the media out west were criticised for their treatment of Adam Simpson before he departed at the back end of the 2023 season.

Shortly after he was appointed at Simpson’s successor, McQualter told Wide World of Sports he understood and accepted the criticism would come as part of the role.

“It’s just part of the job – I understand that,” he said on 3AW.

“You just need to build good relationships and be respectful.”
