New runway, terminal and parking planned for Melbourne Airport under $3.5b expansion
Melbourne Airport is considering plans for a new runway and domestic terminal under a $3.5 billion expansion.
The proposed changes are to cope with expected doubling of passenger numbers by 2038.
As reported in the Herald Sun, a new east-west runway, new domestic terminal building, upgrades of existing facilities and an overhaul of drop-off and pick-up zones feature in the airport’s latest draft master plan.
Lorie Argus from Melbourne Airport told 3AW Breakfast pick-up and drop off areas are also in need of a major revamp, with visitor numbers expected to more than double to $70 million a year.
“We’re looking at a completely news transport hub,” she said.
“It will see all of your pick up and drop off areas integrated into the front of the terminal, actually using some of the carpark which you see today.
“We will take out some the car spaces to create drop off and pick up flows.”
