New laws that would make it an offence to attend, watch, or encourage a “hoon” event will be introduced into Victorian parliament.

By-laws already in place in two councils but the move would make it a blanket law.

“At the moment, police are just hamstrung as to what they can in terms of charging people,” Stuart Grimley, from Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party, told Neil Mitchell.

“They can only charge the drivers at the events.”

Mr Grimley said the aim was to remove crowds from illegal drag race style events.

“If you take away the crowd, chances are you take away the motivation for the drivers to act like idiots,” he said.

You would cop a $1500 fine if found to have attended such a gathering.

“It’s a decent deterrent,” he said.
