With news the new Omicron COVID-19 variant has made its way to Australia, Neil Mitchell says there’s an “air of despondency” around the country.

But the 3AW Mornings host says there are reasons to remain optimistic.

“It’s very early on but there are several things to remember before we totally catastrophise,” he said.

“1. We don’t know enough yet about this threat. It’s very early.

“2. We don’t know the effect. The best news is that early indications are it causes only mild disease.

“3. There are far better methods of treatment … if you do get ill.

“4. We’ve got a smarter approach to fighting it — keep wearing masks, keep distancing, restricted international travel, restrict major events perhaps. All of those things may or may not be necessary but we know how to do them.”
