Neil Mitchell questions Greens councillor who wants Melbourne Cup screenings banned
Neil Mitchell has had a interesting exchange with a Greens councillor in Sydney who is pushing for public screenings of the Melbourne Cup to be banned due to “ethical concerns” about the race that stops a nation.
Rochelle Flood told Neil Mitchell the horse race was often the first time many people had a bet and “normalised” gambling, which could lead to addiction.
Neil Mitchell: So it’s a bit like a gateway drug?
Rochelle Flood: It is. It is.
Neil Mitchell: Like cannabis?
Rochelle Flood: You could look at it that way, yes. It is, for many people, their first entry into gambling.
Neil Mitchell: The Greens support the legalisation of cannabis, don’t they?
Rochelle Flood: We do, yes.
Neil Mitchell: Isn’t that a bit inconsistent? The Melbourne Cup is a gateway drug, but cannabis isn’t?
