Neil Mitchell says the Albanese government is taking a “huge gamble” by allowing thousands of refugees living in Australia to stay permanently.

About 19,000 people on temporary protection visas and safe haven enterprise visas are now able to apply for permanent visas, but only those who arrived in the country before Operation Sovereign Borders began on September 18,2013, are eligible.

The defence force has deployed “surge support” in the form of ships and aircraft to monitor Australia’s waters.
