CBD roads will be narrowed and speed limits slashed if a radical vision to drive cars out of the city goes ahead.

The measures have been flagged by the City of Melbourne in a bid to encourage pedestrians and cyclists.

Suggested changes include narrowing roads to a single lane each way, and speed limits slashed to 30km/h.

“We’re trying to turn Melbourne into Copenhagen.”
– Ross Stevenson

Ben Rossiter from Victoria Walks told Ross and John that Melbourne is fast becoming a pedestrian city without being ready for it.

He said 90 per cent of trips are on foot, and that was causing congestion issues.

“We’ve got over-crowding right across the city,” he said.

“People can’t even get out of the stations at Flinders Street and Southern Cross and at tram stops to move around the city.”
