Major operation conducted as police and bomb squad surround car with ‘suspicious item’ in it

A major operation has been conducted by police and the bomb squad in the CBD and have surrounded a white hatchback with a “suspicious item” in it.

Police have since arrested a 33-year-old man and stated the matter is not terror related and there is no immediate threat to community safety.

Multiple callers told Tony Moclair on 3AW Afternoons about a big police presence in the CBD with Collins Street blocked in both directions between Queen and Elizabeth Street.

Caller Brett is an Uber driver and said he saw multiple police officers out on the street with weapons drawn, while caller Kyle said big guns were drawn with a man arrested.
