‘Move with the times’: Australian Cycle Alliance defends CBD bike lane expansion
The Australian Cycle Alliance has defended the expansion of bike lanes across the CBD and inner-city suburbs, despite the number of cyclists across the five most popular routes dropping according to figures from the Bicycle Network.
It comes as the City of Melbourne recently unveiled a new bike lane project which could see motorists banned from turning right on Nicholson, Spring and Bourke streets.
“I think the council is doing it’s best to turn the city back into a city for people,” Australian Cycle Alliance president Edward Hore told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.
“That means there’s going to be a reduction in cars, it means there’s going to be a reduction in moving mechanical devices around.
“We need to accept that, it’s happening everywhere in the world, Neil.
“If Melbourne wants to remain the most livable city, it’s going to have to move with the times, and that means we’re going to be looking at more and more active transport.”
