A man has died and a woman is in critical condition after a tree fell on a car in the state’s west as as wild weather sweeps the state.

Victoria Police confirmed the fatal incident at Gellibrand, where two people were trapped in their car around 1:30pm after heavy winds saw a tree hit their vehicle.

State Emergency Service (SES) Chief Officer Tim Weibusch told Jacqui Felgate bayside suburbs were particularly affected.

“We’ve had about 400 calls (for help) across the bayside suburbs,” he said on 3AW Drive.

“Gippsland has also seen its fair share (of damage).”
