Melbourne City Council is one step closer to ditching Australia Day.

Councillors have voted to hold a review into how January 26 should be marked in future, and could ditch events on the day as soon as next year.

Lord mayor Sally Capp says the council is “conscious of changing sentiments”.

“We want be proactive,” she told Neil Mitchell. “Everything is on the table.”

Councillor Capp says it “really feels” like Australia is heading towards changing the date of Australia Day.
