Matthew Richardson says he’s “pretty staggered” Isaac Heeney’s appeal for a one-match ban was upheld, saying the incident wasn’t serious enough to warrant being ineligible to win the Brownlow Medal.

Sydney will take the Heeney suspension to the AFL Appeals Board in a last-ditch attempt to have the ban for striking St Kilda’s Jimmy Webster overturned.

Richardson said on Wide World of Sports the strike and subsequent suspension shouldn’t see Heeney ineligible for the game’s highest individual honour.

“I think he should (be eligible for the Brownlow),” he said on 3AW.

“I didn’t think he should be rubbed out, in fact I was pretty staggered (his appeal was upheld). It doesn’t feel like an act you should lose the Brownlow Medal on.”
