Matthew Lloyd’s instant reaction to Sydney coaching bombshell

Matthew Lloyd believes the time was right for a new voice as senior coach at Sydney, following the bombshell news of John Longmire’s departure as senior coach.

Sydney announced on Tuesday that Longmire will transition into a new role as executive director of club performance, with Dean Cox to coach the side in 2025.

Lloyd told 3AW Afternoons Cox’s long apprenticeship under Longmire sets him up to succeed in the new role.

“It’s a fantastic succession plan (at Sydney),” he said.

“It’s a good time to make the change and freshen things up at a bit.”
